In 1989 I qualified as a chiropractor, I left college enthused with the information I had and confident I could help people. I hadn’t been in practice long before the frustration began to mount. The theory of what I knew and the results I was getting did not match and consequently I felt like a terrible failure. It took many years and a lot of further training to understand what good health is about and how to achieve it.
In 2007 I met Dr James Chestnut founder of the Innate lifestyle program – Eat Well, Move Well, Think Well. As I sat in his first lecture I knew I had found the answers I needed.
I worked my way through his program and became qualified as a wellness chiropractor in 2009, one of only four in the UK. I have lived the program personally for over 3 years now and I can say with complete honesty it was easy.
In my own past I have dieted and worked out in gyms to get slimmer, I was always the fat kid at school, the one that was never any good at sport and I lacked confidence in just about everything I tried.
I find it bizarre that I now get up at 5.30am everyday, walk and do exercises, make fresh juices, go to work with enthusiasm and energy, juggle work and family life, stand up in front of people and talk about lifestyle and wellness with a passion I feel in my soul. I am fitter and healthier than I have ever been in my life, I weigh less now than I did in my 20’s and the most incredible thing of all is that it was effortless.
All I had to change was my belief system, I had to be open minded enough to let someone talk to me about another way, another view and then I made my own mind up. After that it was easy, it was so easy.
It was once explained to me that change should feel like a gentle drift down a river in a boat not a frantic paddle up stream trying to stay on top of the water! I would agree that my personal journey and that of my children and family has been the gentle drift downstream. Dieting and endless forced gym workouts seem like that frantic paddle upstream to me and almost certain to fail as you lose the strength to keep paddling and you drift back to the start.
All our behaviour is led by our belief systems. Once you believe differently your behaviour naturally becomes different and the change that follows is effortless. My work is far from over, I dream of inspiring and educating more people to make lifesaving changes to their lifestyles, but finding the forum from which to do that has been a frustrating experience. Over the last 2 years I have been giving lectures, workshop days and private consultations on wellness and lifestyle but I encountered the old age issues of peoples’ busy lives and time restraints and a reluctance to spend any money on preventative health care.
This project initially began as me writing a book but due to the subject I was writing about I decided that a monthly Guide would be more supportive for people trying to instigate change. If you visit the testimonial section you will see the comments received especially after a workshop day are full of excitement and inspiration for change but without continued support that enthusiasm wanes. This is where I realised the guides offered the best of both worlds. A forum to educate and guide from at a very affordable price (less than £1.80 per month). They also act as the reminder that is needed to support people through a process.
Become the proportion of the population that cares about themselves that are proactive not reactive, there is a community of people growing everyday that are normal everyday people that care about their health. We are not tree hugging, chanting, yoga gurus that step off the world to gain peace and health. This new phase of health happens in your world, it happens for the stressed business man, the single mum, the children of the people next door, for old people and young in all walks of life. That’s what makes it so exciting!
My career has taken many turns within my profession but nothing excites me more than the precipice we are now standing on and the power people now have to create a healthier life for themselves. I am proud to be part of such a movement and I hope you will allow me to help you on your journey to better health.
Eat, move and think your way to better health....
